One North Carolina man is thankful for his pet dog! WBTV reports that a North Carolina man owes his life to his dog for saving him during a black bear attack near his home in Haw Creek.
According to the article, Billy Green says bear sightings are quite common in his neighborhood and typically he has no issues with them. Well, unfortunately for him one Wednesday morning went a little different. Green tells WBTV that he was out with his dogs when a black bear kept walking toward them. After yelling to the bear hoping he would run off, it came running towards the man and his dogs, says WBTV.
Once Green’s puppy started barking at the bear, his other dog, Shayla, apparently jumped into rescue mode. The man tells WBTV that when the bear came at him, nearly a foot away, Shayla jumped towards the black bear. As the bear tried to swipe at her, she was able to get it down the bank, Green tells officials. Green says he has never experienced this type of incident in his neighborhood before. He hopes it lets his fellow residents know to stay alert. For those in the area or other areas where bears may reside, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has a helpline to report bear behavior.
