Pets Are Donating Blood

June 14th is when organizations around the world will celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Yes, your pet can donate blood. Just like we need lifesaving transfusions during surgery, so do animals. Dogs have more than 13 blood types and their testing blood types by taking small sample to test with certain antibodies. Dogs have more than eight antigens attached to their red blood cell.  The canine blood groups most commonly recognized are DEA-1.1, DEA-1.2, DEA-3, DEA-4, DEA-5, and DEA-7.

The down side of owning a pet is when they leave the owner heartbroken. Pet donor requirements and screenings can vary state by state.  BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital, is urging pet owners to consider enrolling a pet in a local blood donation program.
