Weekdays 12:00PM-3:00PM

For the most part, parking is free in uptown and in South End on the weekends, but this could soon change. At Monday night’s Charlotte City Council meeting, City Manager Marcus Jones shared his 3.2 billion dollar proposal. A good aspect of the proposal is that there would be no increase in property tax. But one feature of the proposal has a lot of people talking.

According to WSOC-TV, for the first time since 1997, the city is proposing a parking fee increase. In the new proposed plan, the parking fee would increase in South End and uptown from $1 an hour to $1.50 an hour. Parking would also no longer be free on Saturdays. While I understand they are trying to keep people from “hogging” parking spots for the entire weekend, and they want to see more turnover, I don’t really agree with this.

Our city doesn’t have good enough public transportation and isn’t accessible enough yet to restrict parking even more. It’s already a nightmare trying to park in Uptown and South End, and while this would probably make it easier to find places, it would also make me not want to visit those areas. Call me cheap, but it’s the truth. Why would I go eat somewhere where I have to pay for parking too when I could just go to another neighborhood and park for free?

I already hate driving into Uptown because of the parking situation, and if South End starts doing the same thing, I think I would just make my plans to avoid that area. Maybe that’s just my personal opinion, but I stand by it!
