We’ve All Been Pronouncing the “Harry Potter” Villain Wrong
After seven books an eight movies and a new movie out today…you’d think we’d all know how to pronounce the name of the “Harry Potter” villain Lord Voldermort. Well, it seems there may be good reason he was known as “He Who Must Not Be Named” because we’ve all been doing it wrong.
“Potter” author J.K. Rowling revealed in a tweet earlier this week that the “t” in Voldermort should actually be silent. It all started when a commenter tweeted to Rowling, “One piece of Harry Potter trivia I always forget to mention: the “t” is silent in Voldemort, according to @jk_rowling.” Well, shockingly, the author confirmed it was true, adding that she thought she was, “the only person who pronounces it that way.”
So, why didn’t anyone ever correct the mistake? Well, nobody knows, but apparently, the name was initially pronounced correctly by actor Jim Dale. He did the audio version of the “Potter” books until the first “Potter” movie was released. Regardless, the folks on the internet were having a lot of fun with the newfound revelation. Joked one follower, “The “r” is also silent in “Harry” and “Potter.” That’s why we call him Hay Pot.”
