Typical workplace email sign-offs are usually formal and follow the likes of “best wishes”, “kind regards”, “sincerely” and “thanks”. Gen Z employees on TikTok are showing how they and their Gen Z co-workers sign-off on their emails — and there are no “kind regards” or “all the best” insight.

  • “hasta la pasta”
  • “Talk soon loser”
  • “Apologies for existing”
  • “insert pleasantry here”
  • “seeyas later”
  • “That’s all”
  • “That’s about it. Ummm… yeah.”
  • “Ok then”
  • “I’m out”
  • “hehe bye”

Brittney Cooper, a professor at Rutgers University asked Twitter why “modern college students” don’t use formal language in emails: “Why don’t modern college kids know how to send a formal letter/email? I thought everyone knew to begin Dear Prof. X or Dear Dr. X. Instead these kids stay emailing me Hello There! Or Hello (no name): Why are they like this?” she said.

  • Gen Z’s response? “Dear” just sounds “too formal.”
  • Others also thought that beginning an email with “hello” was considered formal.
