MUNICH, GERMANY – APRIL 30: Airline flight attendant and dirndl designer Birgit Backeler sews protective face masks in her dirndl workshop during the novel coronavirus crisis on April 30, 2020 in Munich, Germany. Backeler normally works as a flight attendant for Lufthansa, a job that has come at least to a temporary halt with the lockdown measures on international travel. And while designing and sewing traditional Bavarian dirndl dresses has long been her second occupational pursuit, Backeler has recently switched to sewing protective face masks, which are currently in high demand across Germany. Backeler chooses designs for the masks from the same fabrics she uses for making dirndls, and also accommodates requests from past dirndl customers for matching masks. Germany this week launched a nationwide requirement that people must wear masks in shops and while riding public transport. (Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images)

A new fashion designer is going viral on TikTok for her original creations and she’s not even out of elementary school yet. Kaia Aragon has always had a knack for style, according to her mom, Tonya, who says the girl was always very meticulous about picking out her own clothes and accessories. But when the nine-year-old got a dress form for Christmas, she really put her skills to work.
The third-grader says she’s been designing “for a while now” and her first project was a cat bed. But once Kaia got the dress form - which her mom thought would just be for decoration - she pinned a piece of fabric to it, sewed it together, and walked out in her own design an hour later. Over the last few months, the mini fashionista has been showing off her designs on her mom’s TikTok, @middle.mom, where she’s racked up more than 582-thousand followers and over 22-million likes.
Among Kaia’s many fans? Fashion designer Vera Wang. The icon, known for her wedding dresses, commented on one of the talented kid’s TikToks and even sent her a handwritten note, along with a purple backpack. “So excited to see you are already pursuing your dream of becoming a fashion designer,” Vera Wang wrote. “Congratulations and all good luck.” But Kaia isn’t letting all the attention go to her head and says, “Right now, I’m just doing this for fun.”
