After the recent passing of the federal infrastructure bill there could be a new interstate coming to North Carolina. The new interstate would be called I-685 and start in the Triad area (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) and run to I-95 in Dunn, NC (near Fayetteville). It would mainly run through Lee and Harnett County along the route of Highway 421.

What's the difference between an interstate and a highway? Essentially access. While highways have controlled access ie stop signs/stop lights interstates have restricted access in the form of on/off ramps. Interstates often have wider shoulders and expanded clearance on bridges.

From an economic standpoint, it's common to see businesses such as gas stations and fast-food restaurants pop up along the exits.

The proposed new interstate in North Carolina needs to be approved by the Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation before work can begin.
