SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND – AUGUST 28: A doorbell device with a built-in camera made by home security company Ring is seen on August 28, 2019 in Silver Spring, Maryland. These devices allow users to see video footage of who is at their front door when the bell is pressed or when motion activates the camera. According to reports, Ring has made video-sharing partnerships with more than 400 police forces across the United States, granting them access to camera footage with the homeowners’ permission in what the company calls the nation’s ‘new neighborhood watch.’ (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

A video on TikTok is going viral and is sparking a heated debate in the comment section. People are divided on whether it's okay or not for Airbnb hosts to keep security cameras on during peoples' stays.

In the original video posted to TikTok, you can see a man covering the camera with a towel. The Airbnb host is the one who posted the video calling out the guests for his actions. People immediately took both sides.

  • Some people came to the homeowners' defense, believing that cameras allow the hosts to check if guests are following the rental rules—like not bringing more than the allotted number of guests.
  • Many commenters brought out that the homeowner does have the right to protect their property. According to Airbnb, hosts can have cameras set up in shared spaces as long as they make it known.

For others, it's a total invasion of privacy. Several people added that the difference between a camera in a hotel and an Airbnb is that there isn't the worry of potential privacy invasion by being featured on a host's social media without consent. Others were creeped out at the thought of being surveilled.
