According to CNN, the Ferris wheel-sized space rock known as Kamo`oalewa [[ KAMO-lay-wa ]] passes by Earth each April. It was first discovered in 2016. Astronomers at the University of Arizona noticed that the asteroid had similar properties to moon rocks brought back from NASA's Apollo missions.
The scientists published their findings after five years of data collection. How the asteroid may have broken off the moon in the first place remains a mystery since it’s the only lunar-created asteroid.
