Trying to connect with your mother-in-law can be intimidating. Sure, you probably met her long before she actually became your MIL, but now you’re married to her baby, and you want to make sure your good impression becomes a good relationship. She’s family now, so you want to treat her as such (especially if your sweetie adores her). I'm lucky to have a great MIL.

Here are some ways to really woo her:

  • Ask her for advice – Especially when it comes to her grandbabies, she’ll love knowing you respect her opinion.
  • Include her in activities – Taking the kids apple picking or going out to a game with your boo? See if mama-in-law would like to come along from time to time.
  • Set up a routine – It’s always good to put actual time in our schedules for family. Bring something over for dinner at her place.
  • Make time to get to know her – Carve out a little one-on-one time with her so you can really bond.
  • Get yourself calm before family functions – Sometimes, your mother-in-law can be a tough nut to crack. Get your head on straight before you have to be around her for long periods of time.
  • Remember she has different parenting styles – At the end of the day, your kids are YOUR kids. She can’t tell you how to raise them.
  • Compromise – Work with each other’s schedules and preferences. You don’t want to go around pissing her off.

Try to have a good relationship with all of your partners’ parents. At the end of the day, they ARE your partner’s parents, and if you burn a bridge before you’ve even tied the knot, you’re bound to hit some speed bumps along the way – maybe even AT your wedding. Who wants that?
