With Halloween right around the corner, police are once again reminding parents and caregivers to pay extra close attention to their kids’ candy haul. According to Fox News, incidents involving “suspicious candy-like substances” are happening again as the trick-or-treating holiday approaches. The Auburn Georgia Police Department recently shared a warning on Facebook after discovering a bag of ecstasy that looks exactly like candy.
Officers found drugs that were shaped like little frog heads in all different colors and are urging the public to talk to their kids and educate them about “suspicious candy-like substances.” And while it’s rare for drugs to be passed to kids on Halloween, police say candy checks are crucial. “Can it get mixed in with the candy? It’s happened…,” Sergeant Marc Pharr of Auburn PD told Fox News. And it did happen in Oregon in 2018, when two parents were hospitalized after eating candy laced with methamphetamine, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Officer.
Pharr says they’re not trying to cause parents “candy anxiety” with the warnings, they just want to raise awareness about how easily drugs can be disguised to look like harmless candy. He advises parents to follow basic safety precautions including:
- Watch for potential choking hazards with candy
- Have kids show all of their candy to a grown-up to inspect for tampering
- Instruct kids not to eat anything that’s not commercially wrapped
- Throw out any treats or candy that are homemade, unwrapped, have a torn wrapper or just look suspicious.
