Wow! What a way to meet the love of your life! Nick and Diane's love story caught my eye this week on CNN!
They reported that this pair of strangers were on a flight from London to Houston when fate brought them together and they fell in love on 9/11. Nick Marson, a British businessman in his 50s, was flying to Texas for work, while Diane Kirschke, a divorcee who just turned 60, was returning home from a trip. They had no idea what was happening when the captain announced mid-flight that there were “problems in U.S. airspace” and they were being diverted to Newfoundland, Canada.
CNN goes on to report their plane, along with 37 others, landed in Gander, a tiny town of just 10-thousand residents. More than 24 hours passed before passengers were allowed to get off the plane and locals set-up makeshift shelters in the area to accommodate the thousands of “plane people” as they called them. During the five days they spent there, Nick and Diane met and got to know each other as they enjoyed the hospitality of the Newfoundlanders. When they were finally allowed to fly back, saying goodbye was hard because they realized they were falling for each other.
They kept in touch and Nick flew to Houston a month later to see if the sparks were real. The next month, in November 2001, he popped the question and she said yes! He moved from England to Houston and they tied the knot in September 2002, almost exactly a year after they’d met. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds returned to Newfoundland, where their new friends threw a big party to celebrate.
Their unique love story is featured in the Tony award-winning musical “Come From Away,” about what happened in Newfoundland after 9/11. A movie of the musical debuts tomorrow on Apple TV+.
“We've seen the show 118 times,” Nick told CNN. “Diane will say it's like we're renewing our vows every time we see it.”
