This is so heartwarming!

According to Today, twin sisters who were born conjoined at the back of the head finally got to see each other face-to-face. The 12-month-old girls had surgery to separate them in Israel, which was the first-time surgery of that kind was done in the country. Dr. Mickey Gideon, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Soroka Medical Center, led the operation and estimates that similar surgeries have only been performed 20 times around the world.

The girls, whose names haven’t been released, were also among the youngest twins to be separated. Today reported tht Dr. Gideon wanted to do the surgery before the age of one, which he says is an important developmental year. He and his team have been planning the separation surgery since the twins were still in utero and they’ve been testing and preparing since their birth. A team of 50 was involved in the complex operation, including specialists in anesthesia, pediatric intensive care, and brain imaging.

The surgery was a success and the twins are now alert and recovering. They were a little agitated in the days following the operation, but being placed in the same crib for the first time did the trick to calm them down. Dr. Gideon says watching them check each other out was a “wonderful moment.”
