Scientists may be one step closer to beating cancer after finding what one researcher calls the disease's "Achilles' heel."
The University of British Columbia study has discovered a protein that fuels tumors when oxygen levels are low. This allows the cancerous growths to adapt and survive, and in some cases, become more aggressive.
The CAIX enzyme is what gives the cancer adaptability, making it the disease’s Achilles heel. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, will help researchers to develop drugs that can destroy solid tumors.
