You may notice flags across the state of North Carolina flying at half staff today. Gov. Roy Cooper has ordered both the United States and North Carolina flags at all state facilities to be flown at half staff. He also is encouraging private businesses, schools, and local governments to do the same. This is to honor Henry E. Ellis, a military veteran killed in Korea in 1950.
Accord to the Korean War Remembrance Project website Ellis, a native of Salisbury, NC was a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Service Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He was killed in action on November 30, 1950, in Korea. He was considered "killed in action" however his remains were missing for 70 years. In September of 2020, it was discovered that unidentified remains were those of Ellis's.
They were brought home to Salisbury this past Friday and a full military funeral will be held today in his honor. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Salisbury National Cemetery annex on the campus of the Salisbury VA, according to the Salisbury Post.
