Here’s A Refresher Of When To Stop For School Buses in NC vs. SC
Getting halfway through August means everyone is going back to school soon. So, here’s a refresher of when you need to be stopping for school buses. The rules are slightly different between North Carolina and South Carolina.
In both states, a bus stopping on a two-lane road requires everyone on the road to stop, no matter what direction you are traveling. This is a pretty universal law in most states.
The rules on four-lane roads or multi-lane highways are where NC and SC law differs. In North Carolina, you are required to stop for a bus on a multi-lane highway or four-lane road if there is no median or clear divider. It doesn’t matter what side of the road you are on, you must stop.
On multilane highways or four-lane roads in South Carolina, the law requires you to stop for a bus if you are driving in the same direction. However, it is not required for the cars traveling in the opposite direction to stop, even if there is no median.
Essentially, if you are traveling in the same direction as the bus, you must stop no matter what road you’re on or what state you’re in.
Also, you should avoid the Danger Zone of school buses, which extends 10 feet from the front, back, and sides of the bus. Driving in this zone for long can be dangerous since the driver will most likely not see you.
Some safety tips for bus riders
- Never walk behind a bus
- Always arrive early at the bus stop so you don’t miss it. But if you do, chasing after it can be dangerous.
- When crossing the street to board a bus, always make sure the cars on either side of the street are completely stopped before stepping into the road
