5 Weird and Scary Events in History About July 27th

Each day is a blessing…but each day can be a little random and scary too.

I always wake up being thankful for the day and I always wonder what strangeness is associated with it. Is it national meatball day? Did a big crime happen or a world disaster? Or maybe this is the day that peanut butter was invented.

You might think I’m strange, but learning about the weird and scary events that happen in history intrigues me. So for today, here are five weird and scary events that happened to occur throughout the years on July 27th.

• 1996 Olympic Park Bombing in Atlanta Happened

  On this day in 1996, a pipe bomb exploded in Olympic Centennial Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Two people died and more than 100 others were injured as a result of a bombing. Quoting an unnamed source, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution names security guard Richard Jewell as a suspect in the bombing. He had found the backpack that identified the bomb. He was originally arrested and accused of the crime. However, this was dismissed and soon authorities arrested Eric Robert Rudolph. He was convicted of placing the bomb in Centennial Olympic Park and one in Alabama.

• It’s National Chicken Finger Day

  Ten years ago national chicken finger day was founded. On July 27th we celebrate the delicious quick way of enjoying chicken. Chicken Finger Day was founded by Raising Cane’s, a Louisiana-based fast-food chain that produces southern chicken fingers. You can celebrate by eating some chicken fingers or don't and save a chicken's life.

• Director William Wyler Dies

  In 1959 the iconic film Ben Hur came out and tells the tale of Christ. Sadly, on July 27th of 1981 William Wyler, director of Ben Hur, died from a heart attack. He was only 79 years old.
• July 27th is National Bagpipe Day

  It is national bagpipe appreciation day. It is observed annually on July 27th and it's a holiday dedicated to the beautiful sound bagpipes make. Music has been played on these ancient instruments for thousands of years, including at battles, funerals, royal weddings, and parades.

• An Air Show Disaster Occured

  On July 27th, 2002 the largest air show disaster happened. This occurred when a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 piloted by Volodymyr Toponar and co-piloted by Yuriy Yegorov crashed while performing an aerobatics display at Sknyliv airfield near Lviv, Ukraine. In total, 77 spectators were killed, including 28 children, while a further 543 were injured during the event.
