A 23% service charge will be added to all bills at the Charlotte restaurant, which will replace current tipping procedures. According to management, the goal of the service charge is to ensure living wages for the waitstaff and hostesses.
Out of the 23%, 21% will go to servers and hostesses. The other 2% will go towards paying the kitchen staff. The owners have also said a portion of the money will be used to help fund employee's health insurance, 401K plans, paid time off, and team tips.
If you've ever worked in the food industry, you know tipping is not always the best system to ensure a fair wage. This new service charge might be the change the restaurant industry needs to better support their employees. And, especially now, restaurants all around the U.S. are losing their staff, so adding this service charge is also a way to keep employees around.
Do you support the addition of this service charge? Is there another Charlotte restaurant or restaurants doing this?
