WHITTIER, CA - JULY 23: New Toyota cars and trucks are sold at Toyota of Whittier on July 23, 2008 in Whittier, California. Toyota Motor sold almost 300,000 more vehicles than General Motors in the first half of 2008 putting the Japanese automaker on a course to overtake GM, the world's biggest automaker for the past 77 years. The 2.41 million vehicles that Toyota sold in the second quarter was 2 percent more than the previous year while GM sales fell 5 percent to only 2.28 million. Record gas prices have led to lagging demand for big trucks like those that GM sells while Toyota has had much success with high mileage cars like its hybrid Prius. I remember like it was yesterday, I was upstairs doing homework on a chilly October evening.  I suddenly heard a loud engine come up our driveway and didn’t recognize it.  I could tell from the brake lights it was an old Jeep so I figured someone was visiting.  That’s when I head my Dad walk into the house.  I didn’t really think too much of it as I went back to wrapping up my homework.

I heard him and my Mom talking in the kitchen so I went downstairs to see what was up, and he tossed me keys.  On the key ring was a key to my Mom’s car, a key to my Dad’s truck, and a key to a Jeep Wrangler which was sitting in the driveway.  While I technically couldn’t drive yet, it would eventually become my car to drive all throughout high school.  I was very appreciative and grateful.  After all, I could’ve gotten surprised with a hearse like this Mom did to her teen.
