Weekdays 6:00AM-10:00AM

Being born and raised in North Carolina, I always rave about how beautiful the state is. My best friend who lives in New Jersey always enjoys driving down here because of how green it is here compared to up there. We’ve got beaches, mountains, lakes, just about anything that would make it a beautiful state. Or at least that’s what I thought!

Career and job search website, Zippia, recently put together a list to determine which states are the “grossest” in the country, and I’m absolutely surprised at where not only North Carolina, but also South Carolina fell on the list.

North Carolina ranked #3 on the list while South Carolina ranked #2.

Zippia determined these rankings by looking at dirty air, pollution, trash, number of landfills, illness spread and more.

Here are the top 10 grossest states, according to Zippia:

  1. Virginia
  2. South Carolina
  3. North Carolina
  4. Pennsylvania
  5. Texas
  6. New Jersey
  7. Connecticut
  8. Georgia
  9. Delaware
  10. New York
