Annoying woman texting during movie at the cinema

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn used to say, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Now is the time to do some spring cleaning of your friends list and cut out all the toxic people dragging you down. But since friend breakups are tough, here are some therapist-approved texts to help make a clean getaway.

  • “Right now I don’t think I’m in a place to hang out and be the best friend I can be.” If you want to take an ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ approach, this is the text therapist Sherese Ezelle would use. This way they’ll stop peppering you with Facebook invites to things and you can stop feeling bitter about hitting ‘interested’ when you’re 100% not.
  • “My interests have shifted in the past year and I just feel like we have drifted apart.” Sometimes you grow up and your friends don’t. Whether you need to cut out an old drinking buddy or someone else pulling you to do something else you don’t want to anymore, mental health counselor intern Bernie Crowl recommends telling them you appreciate the time you’ve spent together but that you’re not about that life anymore.
  • “Being in this relationship is not something I’m able to focus on right now.” This one is my personal favorite. Even though you might want to say ‘I’ve met some new friends that are so much better for me than you’ it’s best not to rub it in. Ezelle says to remind them you care for them and all that they’ve done for you but you’ve got other things to focus on than their friendship now.
