Charlotte Douglas International airport is one of only a handful of airports in the US with a public viewing area. The overlook, located at 7300 Airport Overlook Drive, offers an unobstructed view of the planes taking off. The skyline as a backdrop makes for the perfect photo op.

The airport overlook is a fantastic place to takes your kids (I remember going there with my grandparents as a child). Even if you don't have kids you can take a picnic and just spend some quiet simple time. It's the perfect activity to get out of the house especially during the current climate.

However, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is set to begin construction on a fourth runway beginning in 2024. This will, unfortunately, close the overlook as the land will be needed for the project. Airport officials have said that plans are being made to relocate the overlook. These will hopefully be announced as 2024 approaches.

Luckily there is still plenty of time to enjoy whether you are a frequent or first-time visitor.
