Wow! A real-life Lassie!

Mary Violante says her dog, Gracie, barks a lot, but one day her barking was different and it caused Mary to pay attention. She felt her 11-year-old chihuahua-dachshund mix was trying to tell her something and she was right!

Gracie had discovered Mary’s neighbor had fallen on the outdoor patio of his home in their independent living community in Wake Forest, North Carolina. John Ball is 92 and blind and he lost his balance and slipped outside and couldn’t get up. Gracie insisted Mary follow her so she could save John.

Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt too badly from the fall, his arm was bleeding and his back was bruised, but he didn’t have to go to the hospital. John jokes that the only other thing injured was his ego. He also brought Gracie a balloon and a thank-you card and says the dog “has outshined Lassie” with her life-saving efforts.
