Last week, longtime UNC Men’s Basketball Coach Roy Williams announced his retirement. Ironically, his announcement came on April Fool’s Day but sadly it wasn’t a joke. After 18 seasons with the Tarheels, Williams will officially retire! As soon as he made the announcement, UNC began the search for a new head coach.
The short search has come to a conclusion, with former assistant coach Hubert Davis taking over for veteran coach Roy Williams! Davis has been an assistant coach under Williams for the past 9 seasons.
As far as his career as a player, he played for UNC under coach Dean Smith from 1988 to 1992. His resume after college consists of playing in the NBA for 12 years before becoming a college basketball analyst at ESPN. He’s been at his alma mater since 2012.
Hubert Davis will become the first African-American head coach in UNC basketball history.
