One thing that has gone right out the window when we started working remotely is context. There’s a lot of communication that gets lost over Zoom and email like all the non-verbal cues you’d usually pick up in-office meetings. Without that context, we tend to start making assumptions that can lead us to damage our relationships with the people we work with. Here are a few strategies on how to avoid unconsciously undermining things with your colleagues.
- Pause And Reflect. When you start tilting towards a negative read on a situation at work, take a second to think about what really went down. Productivity expert Carson Tate says to concentrate on the facts and anything you “can observe and quantify.”
- Adjust Your Communication And Expectations. According to Tate, “applying a one-size-fits-all approach without respect to the nuances of colleagues and how they work can ultimately lead to miscommunication that can create conflict.” In other words, it’s time to figure out how your co-workers and bosses actually like to communicate.
