Remember when whether to eat garlic or not was the biggest worry you had about dating? To get through these strange times of dating, it’s probably best to get the help of an expert on a lot of things. Luckily, relationship expert Dr. Nikki Goldstein has dropped some solid list of dos and don’ts finding love in the age of the coronavirus.

  • DO embrace technology. Dr. Goldstein says “the biggest asset we have right now is video platforms, where we can see others clearly as though we were sitting across the table” but she also advises to work up to video dates. “Text a little and chat over the phone first, before you commit to some face-to-face conversations.”
  • DO get creative. If you think you’re ready to go on a virtual first date with someone, don’t treat it like a dry Zoom work meeting. Dr. Goldstein recommends planning an activity that will help you connect or give each other an MTV’s Cribs style tour of your homes. You’ve got the time to come up with a unique idea, so use it.
  • DO show you’re thinking of them. Do you know what people love? Food. Do you know what people love even more? Free food. Pull a power move and find a restaurant that’s still delivering to make them dinner. If that feels a little forward, try sending them a digital gift card for the movie they’ll rent on your “next date.”
  • DON'T rush into things. Maybe jumping into a first date before talking to someone on the phone was your style pre-corona, and if so, go on with your bad self. But if not, why start now? Don’t be afraid to message and chat with someone for a while before committing to a face-to-face date via video chat.
  • DON'T think you have to date alone. Most of the popular video chatting apps allow for more than two people, so why not do some double-dating? Dr. Goldstein says it’s a great way to handle the nerves of a virtual first date. Plus, you’re going to tell your friends all about the date anyway, so why not cut out the middle man.
