Biting fingernails is one of the most common unhealthy habits, and it’s also one of the toughest to stop. It’s a habit you can do anywhere and anytime. Since we are stay at home orders until April 30, I figured…here’s a good time to make an effort to stop. I stopped biting my fingernails a long time ago and it’s been the best decision ever.
Did you know the habit is called onychophagic and is estimated to affect between 20 and 30 percent of the population? Well..it does! And it can lead to a host of issues.. so here’s how to stop:
- keep nails short by trimming when needed to reduce the habit and limit tooth wear and tear
- use a foul-tasting polish
- focus on one finger at a time
- Ask for help from friends
- Chew gum
- Get a custom mouth guard
