Wendy Williams issued an apology for her comments on Galentine’s Day (last Thursday). She took issue with men trying to get in on the single women variation on Valentine’s Day. She even went so far as to tell gay men to “stop wearing our skirts and our heels.”
Even after watching this apology. Her show is still canceled at my house. We will not be watching Wendy, at least for now. When I first heard of the comments, I immediately dismissed them thinking that someone who doesn’t know Wendy’s show took her comments out of character. However, when I watched the clip myself, I was troubled. She seemed to continuously double down, and her delivery didn’t seem to be one of “schtick”. It seemed targeted and real. It surprises me because I’ve always known her to be such a huge supporter and advocate, yet she began an uncharacteristic rant like an older aunt who’s “behind the times”.
Now I do believe there is an argument to be made that as a performer, she is constantly ad-libbing and trying to make “lightning rod” statements that shock and engage her audience. If you’ve ever watched her show, you will notice that she is quick with a one-liner, and sayings, that get a huge response from the crowd. So I do believe there is a chance she was attempting to entertain when in reality it offended a lot of people.
I’m not the only one with mixed reaction to Wendy’s message. reaction to Wendy’s message was mixed. While there was some support, quite a few people didn’t buy it.
