Did you hear the story out of Australia where K Mart is pulling their "Children's Bridal Gown" because of a change.org petition? It's a real thing. We talked about our thoughts on the air today, and whether we thought it was a good idea or a knee jerk reaction. We all agreed that kids love wearing dresses, and a bridal gown was fine. Where things took a turn was the reason why there was a petition. Each year, 12 million girls are married before the age of 18, which is one every 23 minutes, and that's a horrific stat. I was blown away by it. I spoke open and honest about how I had no idea that this was a thing.
To be clear, I'm aware of underage sex trafficking, and kidnappings, and child enslavement and it's all terrible. But what I guess caught me off guard is the marriage numbers. I guess I'm thinking of marriage in a traditional way but holly hell 12 million kids are "married off" each year? Sorry I was shocked by this number. It's totally believable, but I guess I just never thought of it. EYE OPENING!
