Alright, alright, alright. I know how the title makes this look, but…it’s the truth.
I like to consider myself a pretty “woke” person. This show is definitely “woke.” The new reality show poses a predicament that would make any animal lover wince. I admit, LauRen showed me this television concept and I freaked out when reading the title. I started reading more about it and then realized that this show is actually not what we think it is.
Britain’s “Meat the Family” is asking carnivorous families to adopt and raise animals that might soon go to slaughter. There’s a catch. If they pledge to stop eating meat then the animal will not go to slaughter but if they reject then they’ll be forced to eat their own “pet.” They’re asking four families to “treat the animal like a member of the family for three weeks.”
Get ready for the woke part…
The question the show is asking is: “How can you cuddle your dog while you’re putting another animal in the oven.” The first episodes of “Meat The Family” involve a lamb, pig, chicken and a calf. In the end they have to decide whether they put the animal in the oven or send it to a sanctuary to live among other rescued livestock.
Experts urge consumers to eat less meat in the face of climate change. The channel said the three hour-long episodes will show “the reality of an animal’s journey from field to plate” and highlight “animal behavior and intelligence, the farming practices required to meet the demand of hungry consumers…and the environmental impact” of producing meat.
I recently went Pescatarian for my own reasons, but would be super interested to see how this show pans out. What are your thoughts on it? Would love to hear them! Feel free to tweet / message me on Twitter / Instagram @_nicoleweaver or message the show! @themrlshow
