I cannot say for a fact that this is a good development but it’s interesting. There is an airline that is now telling passengers, where other passengers with babies are going to be seated. I know how frustrating it can be to be stuck on a 13-hour flight with a toddler who won’t keep still but that doesn’t mean that putting up a baby seat map for forthcoming flights is ideal.
Japan Airlines is now using an icon with a baby face to inform passengers on where babies are going to be seated in an upcoming flight.
Now I have mixed feelings about this because I have flown as both a single passenger and a parent. I always feel for other Moms that are traveling with kids because, I’m sorry, but it is downright HARD!
However, I have also sat next to a family coming home from Napa Valley one year and the little girl next to me (she was probably about 5 years old) got sick and puked all over me. It’s not fun smelling like bad milk and puke for the rest of your 4-hour flight! Trust me.
The newly developed feature is accessible to all passengers when booking online, so passengers who have no interest in sitting next to babies and toddlers can go for seats that are not in a close range.
This doesn’t mean the airlines are against passengers with babies though, in fact, they give priority to them when it comes to boarding.
Some aircrafts even go as far as providing infant cribs, disposable diapers, changing stands, as well as baby and child meals.
I guess we'll have to wait and see if this trend catches on in the US. Nevertheless, if it does happen, I wouldn't mind occupying an aisle to myself if no one wants to sit next to my son and I.
