My first trip to Chicago was amazing. I was invited by one of my friends, who decided to travel here for her birthday and I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to go somewhere I’ve never been before. It started off with a full flight on South West airlines out of RDU (Raleigh-Durham) into MDW (Chicago Midway). The flight was smooth, short, and the flight attendants were entertaining. Day 1 was a visit to Navy Pier with dinner at Margaritaville with of course margaritas!!, followed by a walk along the pier.
Day 2 was very warm, around 87 degrees and we walked a total of 6.6 miles around downtown after finding our way there on the train. My favorite spot in downtown was Millennium Park where I touched the coffee bean! I just could not force myself to eat a Chicago-style hot dog though.
Day 3 was pizza from Giordanos. I could not leave Chicago without trying authentic Chicago deep dish pizza. We actually had it delivered because this day was cold and raining so it was a HBO kind of day. Day 4 was an early flight back home. The temperature in Chicago was a nice, cool 61 degrees but when I landed in Charlotte an hour and 20 minutes later, it was back to the reality of North Carolina fall weather and the temp was 91 degrees.
I was impressed with the efforts to promote recycling and waste saving in the Chicago area. If you need a plastic shopping bag, there is a charge for them and most of the restaurants we visited, used cardboard straws. Those small efforts will go a long way if implemented nation-wide. I had a great trip and I’m looking forward to my next adventure.
