Grammy Award-winning singer Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child is fed up with fans coming at her for actress Michelle Williams’ speech at the 2019 Emmy Awards.
The “Heard A Word” singer has been receiving negative criticism since the 71st Emmys that aired Sunday night (Sept. 22) regarding a passionate speech that was delivered regarding gender and race equality in Hollywood, although she was never present at the prestigious ceremony.
In an Instagram Live video, the singer said that she doesn’t understand why people can’t see that she’s a black woman and not the white actress who shares her namesake.
“Let’s get one thing clear. How come when y’all are tagging and congratulating a person, do y’all see that I’m black when you go to my profile or when you search for Michelle Williams?” the singer said.
She then asserted that she is 100% black and she’s not mixed with any other race.
“I am black so I’m trying to figure out why in the world am I getting cursed out in my comments for Michelle Williams’ speech, which I thought was her truth. I thought it was awesome. I thought she was factual. I could be wrong,” she said.
“Thank you so much for the television academy for this,” actress Michelle Williams said before getting into her passionate speech. “I see this as an acknowledgment of what is possible when a woman is trusted to discern her own needs and feel safe enough to voice them and respected enough that they will be heard,” the actress, who received her very first Emmy after 20 plus years in Hollywood said.
She also specifically talked about the pay disparity between white women and women of color before discussing how women should be respected and believed. “Believe her because one-day she might stand in front of you and thank you for allowing her to succeed in her workplace environment because of it and not in spite of it,” the actress said.
