If you ever came across a tennis match on TV and didn't look up, you may think someone is watching porn lol! Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are some of the loudest players on the tour, shouting loud grunts every time they strike the ball. My wife hates tennis for that reason. As a tennis player, and someone who follows tennis closely I can tell you there's a big reason why players grunt and it's probably not why you think.
Truth is the grunt is to help the player hit the ball in rhythm. Tennis is as much of a mental drain as it is physical. Players use the grunt to help focus on all the things going through their head; where to put the ball, how hard to hit it, and obviously to let out that energy used to get to the ball in the first place. So the next time you hear the players grunt, get your mind out of the gutter :)
