On Thursday, Beyonce surprised her longtime friend and collaborator director Melina Matsoukas with an honor at the AFI Lifetime celebration for Denzel Washington.

Beyonce’s special appearance was unannounced, and a shock for the director. The “I Been On” singer presented her with the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal.

Beyonce and Matsoukas have been collaborating since 2006. The director has lent her direction to the iconic singer’s videos including “Formation,” “Green Light,” “Kitty Kat,” “Why Don’t You Love Me,” “Move Your Body,” and “Pretty Hurts.”

Matsoukas has also directed videos for Beyonce’s sister, Solange: “I Decided” and “Losing You.”

In addition to directing videos for the Knowles sisters, she has worked with other artists such as Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Ciara, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, No Doubt, and Eve.
