Not all heroes wear capes... some design cell phone software!
With an alarming statistic of 80% of emergency calls being made from cell phones, Apple has announced that their new iOS 12 update will allow a "pin drop" feature for first responders when an iPhone user dials 9-1-1. If someone needs emergency assistance but is unaware of their location for whatever reason, it is often times difficult for dispatchers to respond in a timely fashion.
Apple recognized the reality of frequent mobile use and that many critical situations take place outside of victims' residences. Because of this, they wanted to implement a feature for dispatchers to use during a crisis call that will access Wi-Fi points from nearby towers and satellites to pinpoint the location of the victim.
This new use of location is a step in the right direction for smartphone users everywhere. If you are not an Apple product owner, fear not because Google also has a similar function in the works, too!
