There's a bill on the table at the New York City legislature that would give employees the "right to disconnect" from their employers. The bill proposes a fine of $250 to any employer who punishes their employee for not responding to calls, emails, texts or instant messages after working hours.
Sounds great right? This definitely can't work universally, as there are too many diverse types of jobs. For instance, our job! We don't work your average 9-5 office job. Our "5pm" is more like "12:30pm" so it's not fair that we leave and have the attitude that we can't respond to emails or texts until the next morning at our "9am" which is more like "4am."
Council members do believe this bill would have a positive effect on both the employee and workplace culture.
We figured there had to be one angry employee out there that their boss did something extreme to make them mad enough to propose a bill like this. That's why we decided to ask the question...what strange thing did your boss ask you to do that wasn't work related?
Press play and peep Wendy's contagious laugh!
