8 Documentaries On Netflix That Will Make You Say WTF
Fans of Jerry Springer, true crime, and the bizarre – listen up! Netflix has a plethora of interesting documentaries that will open your eyes to the weirdness in the world around us. We organized the list and, of course, saved the best for last. So stream away, our seekers of the curious and let us know your thoughts!
1. Holy Hell
Will Allen retells his story of being a member of the Buddhafield Cult for 22 years. Since he was the cult’s videographer, his footage shows a behind the scenes look on the former members living in Hawaii. When we began this documentary, the alternative meditation group seemed like a peaceful society. However, not everything is what it seems and this definitely holds true to Will’s tale.
2. Queen of Versailles
Follow the story of billionaires, Jackie and David Siegal as they attempt to build the largest and most expensive mansion in the United States. Unfortunately, little did the Siegals know, their construction would be in the middle of the Great Recession of 2008. David’s business was hit hard and his family now has to live on a reduced income. Find out what happens to the Siegals and, more important, what happens to their mansion.
3. Amanda Knox
We all are aware of the infamous Amanda Knox case, but not many know her side of the story. As you watch this shocking documentary, it makes you realize the power of media and question what really happened that night.
4. Dear Zachary
Warning: this might be the saddest documentary you will ever watch. We definitely recommend making sure there are tissues in reach! This film starts off as a project to show the child of Andrew Bagby about his father. Without revealing too much information, Andrew was sadly murdered after going to a park. There are a lot of twists and turns – all of which will make you cry, but more importantly saw WTF?!
5. Glory Daze
In the 80’s the New York City nightlife was filled with members of the “Club Kids” – an artistic group filled with wildly ornate characters. Michael Alig, the leader of the movement, openly bragged about killing, dismembering, and discarding his drug dealer’s body. After many years in jail, he is finally released and is on a quest for redemption.
This documentary is essentially like Catfish, but if the MTV show had a murderous twist. A teenaged girl named Jessica begins a relationship online with Thomas, unaware that he is in his 40’s. After finding his true identity, Jessica promptly stops talking to him and begins to date another person causing Thomas to become enraged. The film itself is a little outdated and looks as though it should be on an episode of 20/20 but, if you stick with it, you will be picking your jaw off the floor with its M. Night Shyamalan worthy ending.
7. Sour Grapes
It might look a little weird to have a documentary about wine in the WTF, but stuck with us. Rudy Kirniawan, a young artist emerges on the wealthy wine scene after selling rare bottles at auction for millions. Low and behold, every bottle that he sold was fake – making this the world’s largest haul of counterfeit wines. Rudy even make up wine’s from Thomas Jefferson personal collection! We don’t know what was more shocking here; the artistic skill in the perfect wine bottle mockups or the money some people had at these auctions. Regardless, it’s a must watch.
8. Finders Keepers
We saved the best for last. Finders Keepers might be the weirdest documentary you will ever watch in your lifetime. John Wood lost his leg after a plane crash, but decided to keep the appendage as a reminder of his accident. When he forgot to pay for his storage space, he lost his amputated leg that was hanging out inside of a grill. Follow to story…and eventual lawsuit of John trying to get his leg back. There’s just some things you need to see to believe!
Sarah Harley is a Hufflepuff living in the NYC area. When she is not talking to random animals or collecting stickers, she is a comedy writer working in television production.
